A California company has recalled hazelnuts sold in bulk, individual containers and as part of mixed-nut packages sold throughout the United States and Canada due to possible E. coli contamination, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced.

"Our advice to consumers is that they avoid eating pistachio products, and that they hold onto those products," said Dr. David Acheson, assistant commissioner for food safety.

Federal health authorities urged consumers to avoid eating cookies, cakes, ice cream and other foods that contain peanut butter until authorities can learn more about a deadly outbreak of salmonella contamination.
