AT&T, facing a marketing challenge by competitors' 4G wireless service claims, accelerated its own network upgrade plans and said it would release devices for its own fourth-generation network.

AT&T demonstrated its support of Windows Phone 7 (WP7) at the software’s official launch on Oct. 11. The carrier will introduce four different WP7 phones before the end of the year, making it Microsoft’s chief launch partner in the U.S.

AT&T (T) said today it will sell the Apple (AAPL) iPad directly to business customers.

iPad watch out: Samsung is gunning to take over the tablet market. The company announced during a press conference late Thursday that the recently announced Galaxy Tab would be launching on all four major US cellular networks—Verizon, Sprint, AT&T, and T-Mobile—and a WiFi-only option will be available soon. There won't be any 4G-capable devices at launch, however (only 3G), and Samsung is remaining mum on pricing.

Verizon Wireless is due to start selling Apple Inc's iPhone next year, bringing an end to AT&T Inc's role as the exclusive service provider for the blockbuster device, Bloomberg reported on Tuesday.

As promised, Apple early today began taking pre-orders for its new iPhone 4, although only the black model was immediately available. Around 6 a.m. Eastern, however, the iPhone 4 page on Apple's U.S. online store was returning an "Oops! An error occurred" message. Minutes later, the entire store went down. It was back up around 8 a.m., and a Computerworld editor successfully ordered one of the iPhones (in black). But by 8:15 a.m., the store was again down, displaying a "We'll be back soon" message.

Gawker said it has been contacted by the FBI and was told to hold on to relevant documents related to a possible security breach of AT&T website that exposed the email addresses of some iPad owners.

It was speculative before given the lack of independent confirmation, but now apparently Apple has gone on record to confirm that the original deal signed with AT&T for iPhone exclusivity back in 2007 was a five-year deal.
