In the seismic annals of California, Monday's magnitude 4.7 earthquake was little more than a footnote. It gave Southern California a small morning jolt but caused no damage and was largely shrugged off by noon.

An earthquake rolled through a wide swath of Southern California late Monday morning but there were no immediate reports of damage.

A magnitude-3.2 quake hit Beverly Hills, Calif., before dawn on Monday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Ever since hundreds of earthquakes began rippling through southeastern California over the weekend, many asked the question: Could this be a precursor to the Big One?

A cluster of earthquakes that began Tuesday night continued Wednesday in northern Orange County, keeping residents on edge but causing little significant damage. Photos emerged of bottles falling off a supermarket shelf in Anaheim Hills, but fire officials said they didn't get reports of anything more serious. At a news conference Wednesday morning, Kate Hutton of the U.S. Geological Survey at Caltech said there had been at least 30 quakes since last night, but only three could be felt by residents.

The state spends a fraction of what countries like Mexico and Japan spend on their systems. One reason for the lack of interest, experts say, is that California has not experienced a catastrophic quake in more than a century. Japan has one.

A 6.7 earthquake rocked parts of Mexico -- including Mexico City -- on Saturday evening. But officials said they don't expect the temblor to cause any tsunami warnings along the California coast.

A moderate earthquake shook California's central coastal area early Saturday. The quake was widely felt in the region but there were no immediate reports of any injuries or damages.

The tsunami warnings have been lifted, and California coastal communities damaged by Friday's waves were assessing the damage to harbors and boats this morning.
