Summit Metro Parks is proceeding next year to build the third phase of the Freedom Trail that runs through Tallmadge and Akron. The $2.4 million project would extend the trail from Eastwood Avenue in Akron to near the University of Akron campus. At present, 6.2 miles of the trail have been built by the park district on an abandoned rail corridor from Middlebury Road on the Tallmadge-Kent border west to Eastwood Avenue in Tallmadge and Akron.Plans call for extending the trail to connect with the Towpath Trail at the southern edge of downtown Akron and to the Portage Hike and Bike Trail in Kent. The park district is eligible for a $500,000 federal grant for the new trail but not until 2018.Park officials decided to proceed in 2016 and to seek additional funding rather than wait to 2018 to build Phase 3.Engineering plans for the 1.75-mile Phase 3 are nearly complete, officials said.Park commissioners on Tuesday also approved plans to improve Alder Pond at Goodyear Heights Metro Park. That calls for dredging a portion of the pond in East Akron, plus removing a metal retaining wall and installing landscaping stones. The work, to cost up to $25,000, will be done by park crews in November. The lake is currently too shallow to fish from shore because of the sediments and muck, officials said.It is one of the park district’s oldest and most urban fishing spots.
