Stories Related to Summit To Improve Security At County Offices

Summit County plans to beef up security at the Ohio Building in downtown Akron, but it won’t station deputies or install metal detectors at entrances, like many other counties do.The council’s Planning and Economic Development Committee agreed Monday to hire AE Security Group of Columbus for $66,300 to install key-card controls and phones at 10 areas inside the building to prevent the public from having unfettered access to some offices. The full council must approve the contract, which is about $11,000 more than projected and doesn’t include the cameras that had been proposed.Visitors would be able to walk into the building unchecked and have access to common areas, elevators and hallways, but they would be required to use a phone to get into, for example, the council, executive, fiscal officer and human resources offices.Visitors encounter secretaries in those areas now.The council has been concerned about safety for employees, considering the high-
profile attacks that have occurred at public and private offices around the nation in recent years. Many other counties, including Stark, require visitors to pass through metal detectors when entering administrative buildings.
