Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner today ordered his department to scrutinize claims payment systems and data collection used by Anthem Blue Cross, which is preparing a new rate filing after withdrawing an earlier plan to hike premiums by as much as 39 percent on thousands of Californians. "I will not allow insurers to inflate their rates based on faulty systems or inaccurate data," Poizner said in a statement. Last week, the state's largest for-profit health insurer withdrew its rate filing after acknowledging "inadvertent miscalculations." The rate hikes prompted the Department of Insurance to hire an outside actuary to look into whether the company was complying with state rules.
