State Supreme Court Rules Sales Tax Initiative Can Go Forward

By RICK M. GREEN Capitol Bureau rmgreen@oklahoman.comThe Oklahoma Supreme Court ruled Tuesday that a penny sales tax initiative to help fund public education can move forward. Opponents had challenged the effort as a violation of a state Constitutional prohibition against such measures that embrace more than a single subject. The court found this rule was not violated and that proponents may go ahead with a signature-gathering effort necessary to qualify the issue for this year's general election ballot. Backers of the initiative, including University of Oklahoma President David Boren, say the state trails much of the nation in funding of public education and a one-penny increase to the state sales tax is necessary to improve pay for teachers, among other things. Opponents say that while more money is needed for education, this is not the way to do it as the state already has a high sales tax rate.Read more on NewsOK.com
