St. Augustine's City Archaeologist Sees What Lies Beneath

ST. AUGUSTINE | When Carl Halbirt looks around his adopted hometown, he doesn’t see, for example, just a nice restaurant lodged in a Spanish colonial building. He doesn’t see just a green plaza with some historic monuments. The city archaeologist can’t help himself. Wherever he goes in St. Augustine, he sees what lies beneath. Entire lives lived, in splendor and in squalor.
