Spain's rise to prominence as the top golf destination on Continental Europe has been a long slow process, started out in 1891 when the very first course opened on the Spanish island of Gran Canaria. Unlike other countries that have more recently jumped on the golf bandwagon, Spain has been perfecting its golf offerings for almost 120 years, putting time, effort and resources into developing a golfing infrastructure that is in a league of its own and unmatched outside of the British Isles.
