California. Oct 2, 2023. #3. I agree with you, but the lack of sleeper availability on all western Amtrak trains is really the problem. There is a huge demand for sleepers and the prices are, resultingly, sky high. It's a bad situation. The solution is that Amtrak needs more sleeping cars, as quickly as possible.

However, the scenary on the Southwest Chief is interesting and fine, with Raton and Glorietta Passes and the red rock country and Indian pueblos. The important factor for me for this analysis, is timekeeping. Typically, BNSF handles the Southwest Chief really well, and the train is usually on time. Not so much for the CZ.

As to scenery, I have been on both the Chief and the SL (to which the Eagle gets attached 3X/week and which follows the same route through the prettiest country - west of San Antonio). There is no doubt in my mind that the Chief is better. As to the current state of amenities.

Sep 14, 2021. #20. This page on the same site specifically lets you look at the success a connection, in this case from 4 (Southwest Chief) to 370 (Pere Marquette) connecting in CHI. Looks like 85% successful this year, and if you exclude a couple of rough patches in mid June and mid July it routinely is north of 90% success.
