Green Capitol Bureau rmgreen@oklahoman.comThe state of Oklahoma has agreed to comply with federal requirements to offer voter registration services through state agencies that offer public assistance programs. Under the federal National Voter Registration Act, the Department of Human Services, the state Health Department and the Oklahoma Health Care Authority are required to ask their clients whether they want to register to vote, offer them voter registration materials and help them complete registration forms. Voter advocacy groups, including the League of Women Voters, asserted in a letter last summer that the agencies were not providing these services. As part of an agreement announced Thursday, officials with each of the state's public assistance agencies worked with the state Election Board and attorneys for the voter advocacy groups to develop a plan addressing staffing, training, statistical reporting and other issues related to voter registration services.
