NEW YORK (AP) — A New York woman is challenging the longstanding rules of Miss America and Miss World that disqualify mothers from their beauty pageants.
Danielle Hazel said Monday that she’s always dreamed of entering the competitions but was devastated to learn that she’s no longer eligible because she had a son when she was just 19 years old.
“When I told Zion, who is now 6 years old, about these rules he had an immediate gut reaction: he said that these rules are stupid,” she said, speaking at the Women’s Rights Pioneers Monument in New York’s Central Park.

Elon Musk has deleted a post on his social media platform X in which he said “no one is even trying to assassinate” President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris in the wake of an apparent assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump while he was playing golf.
Musk, who has nearly 200 million followers on the social media site he bought for $44 billion in 2022, has increasingly embraced conservative ideologies in recent years and endorsed Trump for president.
While he has removed posts in the past, Musk has also kept up and even doubled down on other such inflammatory comments.
Let’s see. There’s the Cleveland Browns three-time Pro Bowl cornerback Denzel Ward. He suffered the fifth concussion of his seven-year NFL career in August.
No NFL coach ever said of him, as the Las Vegas Raiders’ Antonio Pierce did after Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa’s third official concussion last Thursday, “I’ll be honest, I’d tell him to retire.” Does Pierce even know his start receiver, Davante Adams, suffered three concussions early in his career?
Jacksonville center Mitch Morse has suffered what appears to be a league-high six concussions in his NFL career and admits, “It’s part of my story.”
But former NFL players never lined up to say Morse should retire, as happened after Tagovailoa’s latest concussion against the Buffalo Bills.
“NFL, go ahead and do that right thing,’’ former Dallas receiver Dez Bryant wrote on Twitter.
MIAMI GARDENS — I think quarterback Skylar Thompson can do the job as the Miami Dolphins’ temporary starter.
I don’t simply say that because I’m the guy that said one month ago he’s not worried about the Dolphins’ backup quarterback situation.
I say I think Thompson can do the job because I trust Dolphins coaches and management on this one.
I trust that coach Mike McDaniel and general manager Chris Grier wouldn’t go through an entire offseason, and an entire training camp, during which they had a big backup quarterback battle between Thompson and Mike White, only to determine Thompson is inadequate two weeks into the season.
Also, I trust what I saw during training camp.
Thompson, who has improved since last taking the field as a starter in 2022, was better than White.
I think the Dolphins (1-1) should have kept White instead of releasing him, but that’s another discussion.
In short, I’m trusting Thompson, and I’m trusting the Dolphins.

It’s a matter of when not if UF decides to move on from their embattled and overmatched head coach. A 33-20 home to Texas A&M to open SEC play was more of the same for a program with seven straight losses to power conference foes and a pedestrian 10-6 on the Gators iconic home field.
Broward County’s consultant has released designs that could give a sneak peek what future bridges over the New River looks like.
The bridges, that could be built to accommodate both a commuter rail system and marine traffic in Fort Lauderdale, were inspired from “wave forms, fishhooks, ripples on the surface, sea glass, and even caustic shadows projected onto the river and sea floor below,” according to the consultant’s report.
