LIMA — Rhodes State College is acquiring the last two properties needed for its expansion project, inching closer to its goal of establishing a presence in downtown Lima by 2017. Debra McCurdy, president of Rhodes State, said the college will purchase these properties within the next week, and hopes the entire acquisition process will be finalized within the next two months. “We’re almost to the final stages of acquisitions, and we’ll start talking soon about demolition,” McCurdy said. The structures Rhodes has acquired, which McCurdy said were either unused or in desperate need of repair, will be torn down to make room for a new academic building for students in health programs. Currently named the Center for Health Science Education and Innovation, the 70,000-square-foot building will be located at Main and Market streets, adjacent to the Veterans Memorial Civic and Convention Center. McCurdy said the building will serve 800 to 1,000 students in programs such as nursing and allied health, as well as those taking general education classes. The $20 million project is a joint venture among Rhodes, the city of Lima, local businesses and hospitals. “The economic impact of bringing people into downtown consistently is going to make a difference to the business community, and will further assist our students and the health community,” McCurdy said.
