On Wednesday morning, Judge Richard Comerford at the Stamford courthouse granted Genovese participation in a diversionary program for people with mental health issues that will allow a second-degree robbery charge lodged against him to be wiped away. For the next 36-months, Genovese will be required to continue mental health counseling and take his medications while steering well clear of People’s Bank on Shippan Avenue. Urso thanked Senior Assistant State’s Attorney Paul Ferencek for reducing the charge Genovese was facing from first-degree robbery to second degree robbery, which cleared the way for the retiree’s participation in what is known around the courthouse as the “psyche” Accelerated Rehabilitation program. On the morning of the robbery, patrol officer Jeremy Williams decided that he would cruise through some senior housing complexes because the robber had been described as being in his 70s.
