Reports Listed Collapsed May Avenue Bridge As Structurally Deficient

By William Crum Staff Writer wcrum@oklahoman.comThe May Avenue bridge that partially collapsed onto the Northwest Expressway after being struck by a truck was rated structurally deficient, and has been since at least 2008. Inspection records released Friday by the city of Oklahoma City showed problems noted in 2008 also were present when the 64-year-old bridge last was inspected in August 2014. There was no evidence yet to suggest the bridge's condition contributed to its failure, and an official with a contractors' group earlier said bridges aren't designed to withstand a side impact. Nobody was hurt when a truck hauling construction equipment hit the bridge about 2:40 p.m.Read more on NewsOK.com
