Remembering Henning Mankell

Nora Lorek / AP The author Henning Mankell, who died Monday at 67 from lung cancer, came up with the idea for Kurt Wallander after he returned to Sweden from Africa in the late 1980s and was shocked by the racism he saw there. “Racism for me is a crime, and therefore it seemed natural that I wrote a crime novel,” he said in an interview on his website.
