The first rainbow flag was flown on June 25th, 1978, for the Francisco Gay Freedom Day parade. It wasn't until 1994, that the flag was established as the symbol for LGBTQ pride. It goes back to 1978, when the artist Gilbert Baker, an openly gay man and a drag queen, designed the first rainbow flag.
