Political Stakes High As U.s. Congress Returns

In the wake of reports that a lack of water supply may have negatively impacted the work of firefighters battling the multiple blazes in Los Angeles, California Governor Gavin Newsom called for an investigation on Friday, Jan. 10. “The ongoing reports of the loss of water pressure to some local fire hydrants during the fires and the reported unavailability of water supplies from the Santa Ynez Reservoir are deeply troubling to me and to the community,” Newsom wrote in the letter addressed to Janisse Quiñones, CEO of the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, and L.

While campaigning for his first term in office, Gov. Jared Polis said he wanted to see 100% of the power on Colorado’s electric grid come from renewable energy sources by 2040. Lawmakers have approved bills furthering that vision by setting targets to cut greenhouse gas emissions, the goal being 100% reduction from 2005 levels by 2050. Coal plants across Colorado have been shut down with all of them expected to close by the end of 2030.

If Colorado ever meets Nebraska on a football field again, it won’t feel as important anymore because Bill McCartney won’t be there to watch it. As part of CU’s football recovery, McCartney declared Nebraska a rival. Never mind that the Cornhuskers didn’t feel that way. They hadn’t lost to CU since 1967 and were too busy hating Oklahoma. There’s a common theme for the Colorado Avalanche at the midway point of the 2024-25 season: It’s a team that hasn’t been quite as good as expected, but the context might help some awards voters. The Avs were 25-15-1 at the midpoint, a 102-point pace. They started the second half with a loss to 32nd-place Chicago, then blasted Minnesota, one of the two teams ahead of them in the Central Division.
