Phone scammers are difficult to catch. Just ask Joe Matiatos, a sergeant in the Colorado Springs Police Department's financial crimes unit. "It's nearly impossible for us to catch up with these people," Matiatos said, adding that many calls are made from out of the state or out of the country. Officers can follow up on scraps of information like a phone number or a name given to a victim, but leads are especially difficult to pursue when the scammer lives far away. "There's really not a lot we can do in these cases, and I hate to say that - I don't want to embolden the bad guy to think, 'Oh, we're getting away with this,'" Matiatos said.
