Peter Hall, an English-born theater director who fostered the work of playwrights including Samuel Beckett, Harold Pinter and Peter Shaffer, but who may be best known for reshaping the state of British theater by establishing repertory companies built largely on the work of Shakespeare, died Sept. 11 at a London hospital.
