Peavy allows four homers in Giants loss as Lincecum talk intensifies CINCINNATI - Tim Lincecum will host his long-awaited throwing showcase in Arizona on Friday, a month into a season that has not been kind to the back end of the Giants' rotation. Nobody in the organization publicly or privately will connect these developments, but manager Bruce Bochy acknowledged Wednesday that in light of Chris Heston's struggles as a long reliever and demotion to the minors, the Giants' interest in Lincecum is stronger now than when the season began. Bochy would not comment on whether the poor starts by Jake Peavy and Matt Cain will factor into the Giants' pursuit of Lincecum, but common sense suggests that has to be part of the conversation. The Giants have had three reliable starters. Peavy then accentuated the point when he allowed three homers in the second inning and four overall in a seven-run start that raised his ERA in six games to 9.00 - 29 innings, 29 runs. Bochy continues to stand behind Peavy and pointed to his stuff and command over the final three innings. Bochy also credited Peavy with getting through six innings on a day the manager was going to rest Josh Osich, Javier Lopez or Santiago Casilla. General manager Bobby Evans reiterated Monday that the Giants' are solely interested in Lincecum for the bullpen. Lincecum has expressed a desire to return to the only professoinal organization he has known, but he also wants to start. Lincecum reinforced that Wednesday when he broke his long silence and gave interviews to a couple of national reporters. The Giants could stress to Lincecum that he would be a heartbeat from the rotation if he signed as a long reliever. The fact is, that's a role he could fit.
