Recently, Mariana Lemesoff, the longtime owner of the AvantGarden in Montrose, shared a photo of what the bar and performing-arts venue looked like before she took over the property in the '90s. Our lives have been very different. Our life together has been very happy. In (2), I imply that we have shared a life, hence we jointly have had one life. In (1), I imply the opposite (different lives have to be counted separately). Consequently, the singular is felicitous in (2), but not in (1). Felicitous does not mean obligatory, though.

This is a word I often hear used to described a long-term partner with whom a person lives. The phrase live-in girlfriend or boyfriend is sometimes used. Domestic partner also describes the situation, but in recent years it has come to refer to homosexual partnerships more often than heterosexual ones.
