Panetta Said To Be Lifting Military's Ban On Women In Combat

Lolita C. Baldor reports that Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta is lifting the ban that keeps women out of most military combat roles: The groundbreaking move recommended by the Joint Chiefs of Staff overturns a 1994 rule prohibiting women from being assigned to smaller ground combat units. Panetta's decision gives the military services until January 2016 to seek special exceptions if they believe any positions must remain closed to women. A source said chiefs of the military branches must report back to Panetta, or whoever follows him as secretary of defense, by May 15 with implementation plans.
