BY RYAN ABERNORMAN — Four seasons ago, after Oklahoma’s offense struggled in the red zone, Bob Stoops and the Sooners’ offensive coaches came up with a plan to use Blake Bell to help boost their chances to be successful. The result was the Belldozer and it worked like a charm, turning Bell into a star for two seasons even as Landry Jones was OU’s starting quarterback. So when Stoops on Monday named Baker Mayfield the starting quarterback to begin the season, it was no surprise when one of the first questions for Stoops was whether or not there would be a package similar to the Belldozer to take advantage of the special skill set of deposed quarterback Trevor Knight. Knight won the quarterback job over Bell two seasons ago thanks in large part to his mobility. The Sooners are moving away from the zone read that Knight ran with varying success the last two years in favor of Lincoln Riley’s Air Raid. Stoops seemed to shoot down any idea of a special set of plays designed for Knight. “Possibly, but I don’t think Coach Riley is big on packages,” Stoops said.Read more on NewsOK.com
