IOWA CITY — More than 117,000 people in the United States are waiting for an organ transplant, including 686 people in Iowa. In 2016, more than 7,000 Americans died while on a waitlist — or within 30 days of leaving the list for personal or medical reasons — without getting one. But advocates and medical professionals are making inroads toward improving those statistics, records show.
