No Japan deal for Matt McBride with call-up to A’s The A’s promoted the catcher-outfielder on Wednesday in part to prevent them from losing a useful utility player with some major-league experience, according to multiple sources in Japan and in the U.S. McBride told The Chronicle that he had had an offer to play in Japan and that his callup eliminated the opt-out in the deal he signed with Oakland as a minor-league free agent. McBride’s promotion also means that the A’s can use both of their regular catchers, Stephen Vogt and Josh Phegley, without concerns about needing a third catcher. McBride, who was batting .188 at Triple-A Nashville, will be sent down on Friday when the A’s call up left-hander Sean Manaea to start against the Astros. McBride, 30, played seven games at catcher with the Sounds and three in right field. “He gives us whatever we need off the bench and it’s always nice to have a third catcher,” A’s manager Bob Melvin said. With the A’s bullpen fully rested, right-hander Andrew Triggs, who had a nice 1-2-3 inning in his major-league debut Monday, was sent back to Nashville. In order to get McBride on the 40-man roster, Oakland placed left-hander Felix Doubront, who had Tommy John surgery earlier this month, on the disabled list.
