I also heard it used to humanize students toward administration. Students who were discussed as being 'problems' or 'belonging in jail not school' (yes they said that all the time in meetings) by administrators and corrections officers would be defended by saying "Hey! shes one of my kiddos!" or "hes just a kiddo that needs some extra attention".

Which seems to use “kiddo” as a synonym for “kid.” I’ve always thought of “kiddo” as a slightly condescending or at least humorous jibe to a friend who is perhaps somewhat younger, kind of archaic and folksy like something my uncle would say.
