Tehrān, or Teheran, City (pop., 2006: 7,797,520), capital of Iran. It is situated on the southern slopes of the Elburz Mountains. It was originally a suburb of ancient Rhagae (Rey), which was destroyed by the Mongols in 1220 and was later the home of several Ṣafavid rulers of Persia (16th–18th century). More @Wikipedia
