Gerald Ford was serving as House Minority Leader in 1973 when Spiro Agnew resigned from office to face charges of corruption in his home state of Maryland. Ford was appointed by President Nixon to replace Agnew on December 6th, 1973 and served as vice president until August of 1974. More @Wikipedia
