Sounds like they may have a nibble with you. lol On the serious side though, it may have it's place in fishing. After all, the plastic cork, bobber, float, or that red and white thing, at one time was a novelty in the stores.

I bought the white reflective tape at my local farm & ranch store, and it came in 2" strips that were 2 feet long. I just cut about 7 or 8 pieces that were 2"X1" and wrapped them around my fishing pole. I put 7 or 8 pieces on each pole so that I can see the top 2 feet or so of the rod well in the dark.

The way to tell the depth of the water is to cast out your float rig - if the float lays down on its side, then the weight is on the bottom, reduce the depth (lower the bobber stop) a foot or two and try again, and again, until the float stands up, then you know your bait (or actually, your sinker) is just off the bottom.
