Controlled explosion of WWII bomb ignites fires

World War II Bomb Detonation

Nearly 3,000 residents were evacuated from the heart of Munich on Tuesday before explosives experts detonated the remains of an undetonated, 550-pound World War II bomb, Andy Eckardt of NBC News reports. Bales of straw which had been placed around the bomb to cushion the shock of the detonation were set ablaze and thrown through the air by the detonation, according to the European Pressphoto Agency. Some of them landed on the roofs of neighboring buildings and ignited fires.

 

WWII Bomb Likely Killed 2 Polish Children

Two Polish children have died after a bomb believed to from World War II exploded in a field where they were playing. Police said the 10-year-old boy died immediately after the explosion on Tuesday and his 9-year-old sister died of her injuries in the hospital on Thursday. The children were from the village of Konskowola in eastern Poland.

 

Californians' income falls for first time since WWII

Government statisticians have put a number on Californians' paycheck pain last year: about $40 billion.

The federal Bureau of Economic Analysis said personal incomes of Golden State workers fell by that amount in 2009 compared with the previous year – the state's first year-to-year decline since World War II.
