Brett Ratner Resigns: Oscar Producer OUT

Brett Ratner is out as producer of the 84th Academy Awards show. It's been a tumultuous several days for Ratner, who, amongst several offenses, used a gay slur when asked a question about filmmaking. The director said that "rehearsing is for fags" in a Q&A session following a screening of his new film, "Tower Heist," at L.A.'s Arclight Cinemas.

Senh: D'oh! That's what you get for making a gay slur. As a celebrity, you gotta be careful about what the words coming out of your mouth.

Box Office Report: Holdover 'Puss in Boots' Wins in Shocking Upset over Brett Ratner's 'Tower Heist'

Box Office Report: Holdover 'Puss in Boots' Wins in Shocking Upset over Brett Ratner's 'Tower Heist'

The 3D toon grosses $33 million, nearly as much as its opening, while "Tower Heist" debuts to a subdued $25.1 million; "A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas" launches to $13.1 million, just behind last title in franchise.

Senh: The word-of-mouth on "Puss in Boots" must have been amazing. The film made nearly the same amount as its opening weekend. Good reviews helps too. I thought "Tower Heist" would do better, especially with two heavyweights of comedy in the cast - Ben Stiller and Eddie Murphy. "A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas" did solid business. The first film only made $15M at the box office. The second did considerably better. $13M is solid, especially considering the film only cost $20M to make.

Box Office: 'Tower Heist' Wins Friday, But 'Puss in Boots' Should Take Weekend

On Friday, Brett Ratner's Tower Heist -- with a cast led by Ben Stiller, Eddie Murphy and Matthew Broderick -- took in an estimated $8.1 million. However, Puss in Boots wasn't far behind with $7.8 million -- a narrow 18 percent drop from the previous Friday.

Senh: Looks like "Puss in Boots" will win another weekend because family films tend to do better on weekends. "Tower Heist" did decent business, although you kinda expect it to do better with Ben Stiller and Eddie Murphy.

Critics Consensus: Tower Heist is Solid Escapism

This week at the movies, we've got a crime caper (Tower Heist, starring Ben Stiller and Eddie Murphy) and yuletide merriment (A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas, starring John Cho and Kal Penn). What do the critics have to say? If you're in the market for a solid, escapist escapade, critics say Tower Heist should do the trick -- just don't expect much more from this all-star action comedy.
