A memoir by former US vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin jumps to the top of bestseller lists on advance sales.

Almost 48 years after it was first published, "Mastering the Art of French Cooking" by Julia Child is finally topping the best-seller list, bringing with it all the butter, salt and goose fat that home chefs had largely abandoned in the age of Lipitor.

Yesterday, "Marijuana is Safer" hit number 14 on Amazon's bestselling book list, beating out heavyweights like Malcolm Gladwell's "Outliers" and the newest installment of the "Twilight" saga -- even though Mason Tvert's straight-to-paperback tome won't actually be released until September 15.

1. True Detectives by Jonathan Kellerman (Ballantine, $27). In an Alex Delaware novel, interracial half-brothers investigate a young woman's death.

2. Handle With Care by Jodi Picoult (Atria, $27.95). A woman whose daughter has a dangerous birth defect must decide whether to sue her obstetrician.
