New sheriff, but overtime woes wage on Express-News Copyright 2013 Express-News. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten or redistributed. Published 6:29 pm, Friday, January 11, 2013 Former Sheriff Amadeo Ortiz's perennial fight for jailer overtime funding continues to reverberate through the current budget cycle despite his recent ouster from office, new Sheriff Susan Pamerleau suggested Friday as she announced a funding crunch just 11 days into her administration. The Commissioners Court allotted the Sheriff's Office $250,000 in overtime funding for all of the 2013 fiscal year, which started in October. In an agreement worked out with county officials Friday, the Sheriff's Office will receive the funding to pay jailers the promised time-and-a-half compensation for all overtime shifts that have already occurred and will occur through this weekend. Of that amount, only $250,000 was supposed to be used on overtime — the rest being spent on measures such as hiring part-time employees and occasionally shipping inmates to other counties. [...] this year, the idea was to allow only $250,000 total so that whichever sheriff was elected would have to approach commissioners to request more money, if needed, rather than reallocating what was already in the budget, he said.
