A school choice group this week is organizing School Choice Week events nationwide, including several in Cedar Rapids. National School Choice Week, an advocacy group that promotes its eponymous event, said the week will include more than 11,000 total events, including six in Cedar Rapids. Events in Iowa include information sessions, policy discussions and open houses, according to the group. “Iowa is the perfect example of a rural state that has developed an ideal school choice formula: offering parents a diverse array of options both within the public sector — via open enrollment in traditional public schools, public charter schools, magnet schools, and online learning — as well as in the private school sector, with the tax credit scholarship program,” said Andrew Campanella, the group’s president. Xavier High School in Cedar Rapids has several events scheduled to celebrate Catholic Schools Week, including a Mass Tuesday morning with Dubuque Archbishop Michael Jackels. School choice options in Iowa include open enrollment, public charter and magnet schools, online schools, private schools and homeschooling, according to the group. l Comments: (319) 398-8204; andrew.phillips@thegazette.com
