The many visitors to Lione Park on the corner of Stillwater and Merrell avenues, where Maxine Gooden, 43, was shot and killed, will soon see some big changes to the park beginning with a half million dollars of lighting improvements. Police say they are still working on what possessed 21-year-old Jhonel Telemin to allegedly walk into the park and begin firing a high caliber pistol, striking the mother of five, who was about 100 feet away, in the arm and back with one slug just after 10 p.m. About two weeks ago, a traffic barrier blocking off Delaware Avenue -a vestige of the bad old days when the park was seen by some as little more than a drive-through drug market- was removed allowing traffic entering the park to once again exit out Delaware Avenue. City Rep Rodney Pratt said it’s about time some improvements are being made to the park. Since being appointed to his District 9 seat on the board in 2014, Pratt says he has been pushing for improvements. Stamford Parks and Facilities Manager Kevin Murray said the new lights will light the playing fields and the parking lot as well as provide perimeter lighting around the park.
