Stories Related to Mpbn Radio Tower Problems Force Wmea In Portland Off The Air

Maine Public Broadcasting Network’s Portland-area radio station has been off the air since Monday morning, but network engineers say repairs are underway and the station could be broadcasting again by Wednesday night. WMEA (90.1 FM) went off the air Monday about 1 a.m. because a 30-year-old, 1,600-foot transmission line overheated and burnt itself out, said Gil Maxwell, chief technology officer for MPBN. The line, which runs from the station’s transmitter to the top of a 1,500-foot tower atop Winn Mountain in Sebago, had corroded because of its age, Maxwell said, though some similar lines last 40 or 50 years.
