Hollywood voters will choose a mayor and two commissioners in the city’s upcoming elections on Nov. 5. The winners will play a key role in the city’s growth and how the commission tackles controversial issues — everything from setting the property tax rate to deciding whether to approve high-rise towers downtown and beyond.

There’s now an official opening date for Daniel’s, A Florida Steakhouse, the sleek new steak and seafood eatery taking over the Fort Lauderdale space once occupied by Canyon and Val+tino: Tuesday, Oct. 8.
The 4,500-square-foot steakhouse, at 620 S. Federal Highway, will be steeped in Sunshine State history and heritage — from walls adorned in Florida artwork to the menu, which will feature meat and produce from local farms and cattle ranches.
“The focus on Florida extends to our beverage program,” said the Daniel’s wine and beverage director, Daniel Bishop, in a release.
Karen Heriot tended chickens for years. She said that made her eligible to serve on her local soil and water conservation district. But when code enforcers forced the chickens’ removal, she found a new way to meet eligibility requirements. She now grows citrus trees.
Heriot, a sixth-grade history teacher from Oviedo specializing in ancient civilization, won reelection this year to serve on her soil and water board in Seminole County — volunteer work that she has found fulfilling since 2018.
She acknowledges the district eligibility rules “are so squirrely: If you are preparing food, then you meet the qualifications (but) that can be a sous chef preparing a salad.”
