Among treasured memorabilia from my years of working in the airline world is a copy of ‘The Berlin Observer,’ November 1963, with the bold headline: ‘West Berlin in Mourning, Thousands Pay Homage.’ A front page editorial states that ‘many Americans here in the Divided City feel that the grief of the people of West Berlin may very well be unequaled anywhere outside the United States.’ To Berliners, JFK was not only a symbol of their freedom, he was regarded as a friend.
