An estimated $1.37 million bid to replace about 4,600 feet of a water main on Routes 20 and 23 will be up for consideration during the Marengo City Council meeting Monday. The bid comes from Trine Construction Corp. of West Chicago, who had the lowest of three bids for the project after the process closed Tuesday. The city engineer’s estimated cost for the water main work was $1.6 million. City Administrator Josh Blakemore said a portion of piping on Route 20 has sustained multiple main breaks in the past few years, which has been a key driver for the main replacement. Since some of the mains on Route 23 are made of transite – a composite cement and asbestos material – Blakemore estimated they are about 60 years old. The recommendation to the council is to accept Trine Construction’s bid and authorize the mayor and city clerk to sign the corresponding contract upon approval by the city engineer. In addition to the water main replacement, Trine also would be responsible for pavement removal and replacement; driveway removal and replacement; and landscape restoration, including tree removal, protection and replacement. Blakemore said he doesn’t anticipate residents to lose water service throughout the construction process. He recommended that residents check the city’s website and Facebook page for any construction notices related to the project. The council will meet at 7 p.m.
