A 38-year-old man charged with killing a Broomfield woman and her son in a drunken-driving crash was sentenced to 24 years in prison, according to the 17th Judicial District Attorney’s Office. Jose Menjivar pleaded guilty to two counts of vehicular homicide on Sept. 19 in the deaths of Melissa Powell, 46, and her 16-year-old son Riordan Powell. Menjivar was driving at an estimated 80 to 100 mph in a 40 mph zone, in the area of Main Street and Miramonte Boulevard near Broomfield High School, when he crashed into Melissa Powell’s SUV.
