Maine Has Miles Of Aging Water Mains Awaiting Replacement

SOUTH PORTLAND — The water district that serves Portland has averaged around 90 water main breaks in recent years. That’s no surprise since some of the water mains date nearly to the Civil War. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency projects it will cost $384 billion over 20 years just to maintain the nation’s existing drinking water infrastructure.
