By Caleb Bedillion Daily Journal TUPELO – City and county leaders in Northeast Mississippi will have a chance next week to learn about a funding source to eliminate blighted homes. The Mississippi Home Corporation will host an informational session at Tupelo’s City Hall on April 20, one of four informational workshops scheduled across the state. During the four-hour session, officials from cities and counties can learn about a blight elimination program. Under the program, successful applicants can receive up to $500,000 per application cycle to demolish dilapidated homes that are past any hope for repair. The program requires local government entities to obtain a community partner to help manage the blighted properties following demolitions. The program dollars are not available to private citizens. According to early estimates, approximately 2,000 homes could be demolished across the state with the blight elimination funds. The Mississippi Home Corporation is a state entity that administers a number of federal housing programs. Tupelo’s Development Services Director Shane Hooper said the city of Tupelo will apply for the blight removal money, though he still has some questions about the program requirements. “It looks like a good program and it could be a game-changing program, but I still need to learn more about the requirements,” Hooper said.
