Cory Williams, D-Stillwater, on Tuesday called for a moratorium on water disposal wells in parts of the state after a report from the Oklahoma Geological Survey described a likely link between the wells and the state’s ongoing earthquake swarm. The report said the state’s seismic activity is “very unlikely to represent a naturally occurring process” and the the areas with the most earthquakes “can be observed to follow the oil and gas plays characterized by large amounts of produced water.” The Oklahoma Corporation Commission has boosted regulations on water disposal wells over the past two years, requiring operators in select “areas of interest” to monitor pressure, volume and other data in the wells on a daily basis. Cease and desist Williams, however, said the effort has not gone far enough. “I am calling for a cease and desist of all saltwater disposal wells in those 16 counties,” he said.Read more on NewsOK.com
