Legislative Roundup: Bill To Protect Municipalities From Water Rights Violations Moves To Colorado Senate

By MEGAN SCHRADER AND NEWS SERVICES megan.schrader@gazette.com -DENVER - A bill to protect municipalities from claims of water rights violations over stormwater detention facilities and wildfire mitigation efforts passed committee Wednesday and is headed to the Senate floor. Senate Bill 212, by Sen. Jerry Sonnenberg, was drafted in response to a letter to Colorado Springs Utilities and other entities in El Paso County putting them on notice that water holding and filtration systems used for wildfire mitigation were violating water rights and the owners of those rights must be paid. Sonnenberg said passing a law to allow those systems to continue is a "no-brainer.
