AUGUSTA — The Maine Supreme Judicial Court today heard oral arguments in a landmark case of whether a Madawaska mill should be forced to pay an injured worker’s medical marijuana costs. Twin Rivers Paper Co. wants the court to overturn a lower judge’s ruling that it must reimburse 58-year-old Gaetan Bourgoin, who suffers severe back pain from a 1989 injury, for his monthly medical marijuana costs. For years, Bourgoin used doctor-prescribed opiates to manage the pain with little success, ending up addicted and suicidal.
