James Mangold believes that Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is showing the aging adventurer in the best way it can – as an old man who is becoming a fish out of water in a changing world. However the movie also takes us back in time to see Indy around the time of World War II with an extended opening sequence that de-ages Harrison Ford to his Raiders of the Lost Ark days, and according to the director, that opening helped avoid his biggest problem with the previous movie, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.
