"james Bond" Gun Legislation Misfires

This week, Senator Edward Markey (D-MA) introduced legislation requiring gun manufacturers and gun owners to adopt new technology that prevents anyone except the owner of a gun from firing it.   The technology is often referred to as “James Bond technology” because of that character’s high-tech gun in the movie “Skyfall”.    I support Senator Markey’s effort to modernize this dangerous industry, and I support new gun control legislation overall.  But mandating this technology probably isn't the best way to bring innovation and improve gun safety for the general population.  This technology, like that of any other industry, needs to go through the innovation cycle and figure out its business model.  It needs to be tested in the market and gain traction before the government steps in.
