His capacity to make things up is one of the defining features of this presidency. His loose adherence to facts, when it suits his political purposes, seems to know few limits. It would be easy to dismiss all this as more of the same. But, in particular, when he falsely alleges that millions voted illegally in 2016, the claim strikes anew at one of the foundations of a democratic society.
