Pratt, a 30-year veteran of the State Police force, was helping a lost truck driver early Wednesday morning when he stepped off the 18-wheeler's running board onto a county highway and was immediately struck by an SUV traveling about 55 mph. Local law enforcement agencies, fire departments and emergency service crews stood among dozens of gray-clad State Police members and their families. Dotted throughout the crowd were officers from State Police agencies as close as Pennsylvania and Vermont, and as far away as Wisconsin, Minnesota, North Carolina and Florida. Photos showed Pratt patrolling a highway, working with schoolchildren, riding a State Police motorcycle and flexing his tattooed arms on a diving board, his face covered by a goofy grin. [...] emerged a picture of a love note slipped under coffee beans, an image of him embracing his fiancee, a snapshot of his newborn granddaughter.
